Neon vs Faux Neon

Neon stands the test of time, creating beautiful pieces of art, but it’s a dying art form due to the issues with sustainability and cost. One thing is for certain - no one wants to part with the aesthetic possibilities neon offers.

While we have the ability to continue to craft authentic neon, along with the know-how to refurbish old neon signs, many sign makers are looking to more sustainable and cost-efficient alternatives.

Benefits of Real Neon

Choosing real neon over the new alternatives can be a difficult decision, but there are some positives to going with a traditional neon sign:

  1. Neon emits a warm glow; the light is created through a chemical reaction between gases and an electrical current.
  2. Real neon has a longer lifespan, with easy maintenance that generally revolves around refilling the gases needed for the chemical reaction or replacing the glass tubes that house the elements.
  3. Neon is durable and won’t be damaged by power surges.

Drawbacks of Real Neon

Despite the iconic neon look and positives, there are some drawbacks:

  1. Traditional neon is less eco-friendly and needs significantly more power to run than LED alternatives.
  2. It poses danger if the glass breaks, which will release noxious gases, and can be hot to the touch.
  3. It doesn’t allow for the light to be altered in any way – meaning it can’t be dimmed or have color variations.
  4. There are increased restrictions on how neon is being manufactured.

Alternatively, you have faux neon, known as LED neon in the industry. LED neon is generally made of LED flex, which is a bendable rope of LED lights that can be arranged in a way to mimic the effect of shaped neon glass tubing.

Benefits of Faux Neon

The benefits of LED neon are certainly tempting as an option if you want that classic vintage, or new trendy look for your brand:

  1. LED neon is more energy efficient than traditional neon with lower running costs if you opt for a large display.
  2. LED neon is a safer choice since it doesn’t give off heat with no potentially harmful gases involved in running the lights.
  3. They have a brighter, more consistent light that helps the sign be seen from farther away.
  4. You can dim, flash or change the color as you like.
  5. LED neon is more durable than the glass tubes of traditional neon, and rather long lasting. It is designed to run 5-10 years before necessary maintenance or replacement.
  6. It is to fit and wire, with more ability to replicate brand logos exactly.

Drawbacks of Faux Neon

On the other hand, there are downsides to faux neon, too:

  1. Some find LED neon less appealing to look at and can be harsh if the LED is not diffused correctly.
  2. Maintenance can be costly if the acrylic house must be replaced, or the LEDs themselves need repair or replacements.
  3. LED neon be damaged by power spikes if proper surge protection isn’t in place.
